Is it really necessary to load the Comcast software from their web site as they are instructing for the transition? Or is it like the old software they provided at start-up...better left off your computer altogether?

Just set up everything to DHCP enabled, and remove any proxy settings from your browser, and IF the network is working you should be good to go
