View Full Version : No refresh in Entire Network (XP)

First off, I'm new to networking so please cut me some slack. I've received some excellent help here, so thanks in advance for your time. I got my feet wet in networking through the need to share an Internet connection. I have three PCs behind a Router and DSL Modem. When I'm on the XP machine and I look in Entire Network I can see the other two PCs (if the third is powered up, it's a notebook). This morning I was transferring files from the notebook to the XP machine across the network. Everything worked fine, but now (the notebook is disconnected from the network) even though the notebook is not online, I can still see its icon and the folders I was in while transferring. I tried to use View, Refresh in Explorer, but it's still there. I tried to access the notebook folders (knowing it was offline) in order to hopefully get an error message and then hoping the folders would disappear, reflecting the realtime situation. Any suggestions on how to refresh the view of the Entire Network at any time? Thanks to all.

Hello..., anybody home??? Is this question too obscure or so elementary nobody wants to waste their time on it? I've never had a question not receive any answer at all. I would really like to resolve this problem. No, it's not life or death and probably doesn't challenge those with more expertise. But could someone lend a hand? Thanks.
Well, it's Sunday, and SuperBowl Sunday at that. Someone will answer eventually...I don't know the answer to your problem. Is the fact that it's showing up and not connected cause problems? Can you right click on it and delete it? Disconnect from it?
I don't have experience with your problem, but wanted to answer anyway. ;) Most people, if they don't know the answer, will not post a reply. That's why you have a dozen-plus reads and no replies as most of us probably don't connect and disconnect laptops. Someone will get to ya. Track down and PM YeOldeStoneCat. He can probably helpya out.

SilverD, thanks for taking the time to respond. I had wondered about deleting the connection to those specific folders, but didn't know the consequences. You've pulled me out of the fire before, so I'm going to try it. Later.

Sounds to me like somewhere in your folder options you must be automatically creating shortcuts to shared files or folders in My Network Neighborhood. Try looking in you folder options see if there is an option for that. I dont use XP so this is just a hunch.

Thanks Marquis, sounds like a good possibility. Later.

XP creates a mapped drive for every connection you make and displays them for you as shortcuts. I find it a handy way to get back to places I've been on the network, myself, but in your small network that probably isn't a concern. Anyway, this is, as they say, "By design." If it really irritates you, I can do some digging and see if there's a way to remove the shortcut once you disconnect.

Thanks for the hint, JustMe, I did delete the shortcut and Entire Network now reflects the realtime situation. Later.
