Well the obvious choce is a router. which one you choose is up to you.. i love htel inksy router but others like the netgear rourer.. they say it is faster and more efficient.

I choose the linksys 4 port router and have no problems though...

both are just about the same price

Routers are just about always faster, less problems. The NetGear is one of the fastest home broadband routers. Linksys routers are in my opinion the easiest to manage, setup, etc, and they've really improved their product over the years since it first came out...earned a "buggy" reputation back then. Nexland routers, a bit more $$$, are the speed champs. If you want some serious power, spend some $$$ and get an upper end Netopia or Cisco.

Ahh, did you say Linux? Then why would you need a router? Unlike Windows 2000 Linux is a true Network Operating System.

If you are running Linux you already have more network features that that router will ever have. All you need to do is write a script :D

What system are you running? (kernel version and distro)

Advantages of a router:
Built in switch, you don't need another hub/switch
Only takes like a whopping 3 minutes to unbox, setup, and get your entire network online.
Takes up little space, perhaps 6 inches by 4 inches or so
Maintains an always on connection
You don't need to spend time learning Linux, and trying to get it installed on another computer (I already have too many in my home), which yes you'll have to get another computer in the mix, and another hub/switch to share out, and have that computer running 24/7.

Not to knock on linux, it's great, it's fantastic to learn, and for people into learning about 'puters, I say go, more power to ya for learning it. But not everyone wants to roll up their sleeves and go through all that, they just want to plop something there and have it work with minimal effort and ease of use...nothing wrong with that.

You can use NAT via IPChains to share the internet to your Win32 clients.

The following might be usefull.

I hope you already have all of the required networking hardware. (NIC's and a HUB)

hi agresor,
linux is a good choice for ICS or NAT

for suse kernel2.2.x you sould go to
http://www.pointman.org/PMFirewall/
and download the script there, decompress it go to the directory
and start sh install.sh, answer some easy questions and ssswusch your ics and a good firewall is setup.
the setup is only few k big.

the better solution is to download and install a mostly preconfigured firewall solution.
mandrake SNF firewall 7.2 is not bad,
i used it before and its easy to install. All configurations can be made through a webbrouser from the clientmachine and there are good LOG viewer and transparent proxy for surfing boost.
download at www.linux-mandrake.com
(think mandrake has the best desktoplinux too, i use 8.2 beta now)

now i use the SME Server5 (i own a computershop and I-Cafe with 8 Clients)
you can download it here
http://www.e-smith.org/downloads/
its similar to mandrakes configurable through a webbrowser on any machine but has more good features
as they are:
preconfigured webserver
ics/nat
good firewall and intrusiondetection
good and easy emailserver
and IMP Webmailserver (cool)
ready SMB Server for Files and Printers
ready FTP server easy to administrate
and ready Appletalk server for macfans

for me as Server the SME is the best choice
and the Desktoplinux the Mandrake

hope i could help
