As far as I know if you lost your number theres no way to "look it up" . Your gonna have to call Microsoft and tell them and they'll give you another.
Rainbow
You can find your product key in the registry under this key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
Run regedit, navigate to that key, click on it, and in the right hand pane look for "Product Key"
It will be there.
Sometimes it is necessary to use this method when your book isn't handy and you can't remember that looooong number.
It's not fair to assume everyone who needs an alternative is pirating. I use that method myself a lot. Some people have legit versions of the Win CD and can't find thier book, so before a format and reinstall I get thier Key value from the registry under that key.

yes you are right, and thank you for the help.thats what and why I needed it.
OK... let me clear the air here......
My first response to the original poster was quick, and to the point.... that was it. Just like the way his question was posted. Nothing else intended or inferred. I questioned if he bought it as a legitimate question. Many people don't. I don't really care one way or the other. Like all of my software is 100% legit... yeah right.
I gave him the answer of " On the CD jacket it came in..... period ", because that's the truth. You won't find it anywhere else, either before, after, or during an install.
Norm- the value you referred to is the Product ID, which is generated after the install. It is not the key code he needs to install the software.
Yes, my 2nd post was pointed, in the flavor of his response to me.
So sorry all....
But, exit1mile, you won't find the key code anywhere else. But, you could try one from another friends install disk. Many times they will work.

I'll have to check Win2K to see if it works in there too, not sure. Same for NT and XP, I'm not sure.
Product ID, and Product Key are in the same Key on Win9x and ME, and they are 2 different things.

no problem, but what Norm said turned out to be correct in Win ME,it is the proper product key for my win me cd that I needed.
Cool. Yes norm, I knew it was for 9.x, but I didn't think it was for ME. I stand corrected for sure!
Win 2000- no. Pro ID only.

Win 2000- no. Pro ID only. np twwabw it's hard to keep everything in memory since we have to reboot(sleep) at night and lose what is stored :D
Didn't mean to pick on you either re: your first post. SG doesn't condone pirating and I agree with the policy, but sometimes there is a bit of leeway to consider too.
You're a great help around the site, I've read a lot of your posts, and wish to remain on your good side as a friend :)

darn i thought it would show the product key which is located on the back of my cd case. (thought to learn something new)
But i am running win2k and it only shows a product id which is given after install. Is there another place to look for this product key on win2k. Not really necessary because i have the cd key on my case....but would be nice to know if i ever did lose it.
