Hi,

I'm new to networking. I wanted to connect two computers to share my cable internet access.

I have bought a SMC Barricade 4 port router (SMC7004BR). I followed the steps in the manual... but I can't renew the IP (one of the beginning steps >_<).

When I click release then renew I get this message...
Error
DHCP Server Unavailable: Renewing adapter ""

All the cables are connected snuggly. But for some reason it won't renew. I also tried turned it on in this order Cable modem (waitted till it is fully on), Turn on router (wait till fully on) then computer.

I am using Windows ME. My ISP is Rogers with a Terayon modem.

The ISP is an Cable conecction or an wireless connection? or a modem connection???

When you turn on your PC, you had to connect to internet or is like a lan???

You had a router betwen the pc and the terayon modem?

I connected the cable modem to the back of the router (WAN I believe it is called). Then I connected port 1 of the router to eternet card on my PC. Did I make a mistake?

look, i don't know why you put a router btwen the modem and the pc, i think that is a stupid idea, because the router had a configuratión that you had to change anytime you do anything new.
I recomend you to connect directly the modem to and ethernet in your PC, and put a second ethernet on your pc so you can rout the packets trough your pc, because you are making a subnet of your ISP you need something that rout the packets and something that asing an internal IP, thats the problem, the router don't asing an internal ip to your second PC and the router had to take a bigest and dificult configuration to do that.

I live in argentina, and the cablemodem "calling that way here" had a motorola modem, and the modem has a port to take a CAT 5 cable to an ethernet, thats de only way i found to use the service, i can put a Router in middle, or a hub, or something. Only a PC, maybe this is something to think a lot, but if you want to this subnet work, do that i told you.

Otherwise you can't renew an ip, because you had to take a DHCP server to your home!
the router can do that, the router can make a DHCP server for itself, and it is imposible to take a configuration to do that.

The router had an ip that the ISP asing, and you had an internal ip that is a subnet with you create in the configuratión of your router, is imposible if you are behind a router to reach a DHCP server trouhgt this, but is POSIBLE to do this, but is really stupid do it with internet.

that i mean, is the router can do the work of a DHCP server, BUT! only can assing you an internal ip of your subnet.

Otherwise the DHCP server of your ISP Save all data that find to your router, and maybe if the DHCP server is configurated that if you wan't to change the ip assing the same ip that the configuration is saved.

Is very hard to explain all the functions of a DHCP server.

I Recomend to you with all my heart, forget isung a router in your home, because the terayon modem, is already a router.

I've got the same router and am having the same problem on one of my comps. Two other computers hooked up with no problems at all.

I tried connecting the comp I'm having problems with straight back to my dsl modem bypassing the router and got the same error. This comp and nic card used to work straight to the modem.

Right now I'm thinking the problem might be a bad cable.

If you get it solved please post the answer.

I had some kind of conflict with another card. It might have been a bus-mastering thing or corroded contacts in the pci slots.

I moved the nic card to a lower slot and removed the dvd decoder card. Network works fine now.
