I have been running the same network setup for almost 3 years now. 2 systems each with one NIC card. The NIC of each computer is connected to a simple network hub which in turn is connected to the cable modem and from there goes out. Each systems is running Win ME and Sygate's personal, software firewall. We have 2 IP addresses assigned by Comcast to our account. There used to be a seaperate "computer name" for each system with our old @home service based on a static IP system. The switchover to Comcast's network changed us to a dynamic IP address. This is when my problems began.
I set up each computer to obtain it's IP address using DHCP. So far so good, the network reamained stable. I am still able to do all the things i could before on my network. The problem comes when I try to access the internet with both computers. Each computer individually can access the internet. I only have to reset the modem by unplugging it then boot up whichever computer I want to get online first.
After numerous calls to tech support. A modem repush, a modem reprovisioning etc...I am still in the same boat. I am being told that because each computer has access individually that the problem is my network setup. The flaw in their logic is that these computers have access individually THROUGH my network, I do not have to plug them directly into the modem for it to work. If the problem was my network I would not be able to get online at all without going directly through the modem.
I have no experience with DHCP as I have always been on a static IP system so maybe I am at fault here because I am not correctly set up. All I know is that I had a flawless network for a number of years, then the day after I switched over it stopped working. Who is to blame here? Is my network hub getting in the way of my second computer obtaining an IP address dynamically? or is the cable company at fault on their end somehow? I don't know where to go from here, I have exhausted all my ideas on where my problem could be. I have extensivley checked my network setup and both computers settings to be sure everything was good to go on my end and have been through numerous troubleshooting sessions on the phone with Comcast techs. All to no avail.
