I have @home cable (at least for a little while longer) . I set up my new Linksys BEFSR41v2. I connect one port to an XP computer and another to a 98SE computer.

Both computers can surf the net and snd/rx email.

XP computer can see W98SE computer, share files and use printer connected to W98SE box.

W98SE computer can not see XP computer at all.

I've enabled sharing on the XP. At least what I think is the right way to do it. Clicking on drive, allowing sharing, disregarding MS warnings and it shows the little "Sharing Hand" Icon for my C Drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to networking and had no problems getting to this point, but now I'm perplexed.

Thanks ahead of time for your help,

Jeff

This is just a guess, but, if XP is set up as NTFS then Win98, which is FAT32 will not see it.
I am not into networking, so this is just a stab at the problem.

Have you enabled sharing on the 98 machine?

Err... Nevermind, I just READ your post. I'm a moron.

Not true...browsing "shares" has nothing to do with the file system of a hard drive. If that was the case, then 99% of the networks in the world would not work. Just think of how many NT 4 servers out there with Windows 3, 95, 98 workstations connected to them there are.

NTFS lets you add more security, if you know how, to files on those drives. True, if you plug/slave a hard drive with NTFS to a Win9X computer, you cannot read that drive through my computer also. But through a network, browsing shares work fine, the OS will translate it.

Do yourself a favor first, remove that "share" from the entire C drive. Share only a data folder, not your entire drive, through which someone can browse in and mess with your operating system files.

Home Routers DHCP services do horrible jobs of managing TCP/IP for proper and speedy network browsing. I always do router setups on smaller networks with NetBEUI. Take NetBEUI, combine it with the same workgroup, make sure the Client for Microsoft networks is your primary logon in 9X machines, and you have flawless networking. NetBEUI is built into 9X and 2K, but in XP, you have to manually add it from the cd-rom, punch down in the cd-rom to a directory called valueadd, the next two I forget, something like networking, microsoft, etc. There's a little text file to open up and read where to copy the .sys and .inf file to. You have to unhide hidden files/directories on the XP box to see both of the directories you have to copy to.

I am not into networking, so this is just a stab at the problem. At home I have XP with NTFS sharing files both ways with wME and w98se with FAT,, no problems, YeOldeStonecat is correct.

I seen a post stating that too so tried it myself because it made no sence that thru network they couldn't share. So for the record the disk format doesnt matter.

I'll try the NETBEUI option. Are there any specific instructions on a website that I can try.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Jeff

I didnt put Netbeui on my XP rig,, I don't forward any ports thru my router so I just use TCP/IP for file and print sharing.

Are you asking for further clarification for installing netbeui on XP box?

If so I know there is an old thread in this forum stating how.

here is a thread on installing netbeui (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63894&highlight=netbeui) on XP box

I know there are others as well, just do a search

and here is another thread (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62533&highlight=netbeui)
