This may or may not help you. When I had "boot to desktop" problems it ended up being 2 things. One a bad stick of RAM that would sometimes work properly and sometimes fail on me. The other being an IRQ conflict which was solved by leaving the first PCI slot underneath my AGP slot open, moving my soundcard to the bottom most PCI slot and going into the OS's "device manager" and making sure there were no IRQ conflicts. Three most important are the video card, the sound card and the NIC card or modem. Basically many times an IRQ conflict that involves the NIC card won't be noticed until you try to play games online where the sound, video and NIC are proccessing interupt requests.

u dont have to buy new ram, just take one of them ou, if u have 2 and try. I had linksys and had a similar prob, with red alert 2. But that was a driver prob with game.
U can try to get the most up-2-d8 drivers on linksys site. Make sure there aint driver conflicts. U might wanna try making the linksys on another PCI slot. If this reaally bugs you, and the Ram aint the prob, get another NIC, they aint that expensive

Router/Switch/Hub gaming problems usually show lag or have wierd graphics when playing online while you don't have them playing offline. Video card problems may account for your crashing to the desktop. But to be sure, make sure you have the latest firmware.-
