I currently have the following specs:

p4 1.4 GHz.
128MB RDRAM (Upgrading to 384 ASAP.)
40 GB HD. (5400 RPM.)
GeForce 2 MX 200. (32MB of SDRAM.)
320k SDSL Connection.
Running Windows 2000 Pro.

My questions:

1) When I get more RAM will the gameplay be better?
2) What should I set my rate at?
3) What can I do as of now to lower my ping and make the gameplay better. A friend of mine gave me the following commands to try but I would like somebody that knows what they are talking about help me on this one. Please check these out:

cl_cmdrate 25
cl_download_ingame 0
cl_gibcount 0
cl_giblife 0
cl_himodels 0
cl_rate 3500.204
cl_updaterate 15
fps_max 120
r_decals 0
mp_decals 0
r_drawviewmodel 0
r_shadows 0
violence_agibs 0
violence_ablood 0
lightgamma 0

Please tell me what I should use instead of those. He said that it helps HPB. Well, like I said I have 320k SDSL. Please help me!!!

Thanks,
Axion

As you can see my specs above what video mode and resolution should I use for the best gameplay and ping.

1) Open GL or Direct3D?

2) 800 X 600 or 1024 X 768?

Thanks!

Definitly OpenGL, 800x600 would give you better frame rates.

What is your ping time now?

What are your rates now?

Try,

cl_cmdrate 30
cl_rate 5000
cl_updaterate 30

or even
cl_rate 7500

plus do (I'm not at home but think these are right)
cl_allowdownload 0
cl_allowupload 0

as far as trying the others it is up to you. Simply make a backup copy of your config file and then make the changes to try them. If you don't like something it is always easy to go back.

If you want to start faster then you need to delete the file that stores all the decals from other players, I can't remember its name. The larger it gets then the longer it takes for you to join in at the start of each new map or connecting to the server.

And finally yes any NT based operating system likes RAM, the more the better. Hard to say how much it will help you, but adding at least another 128 would be better. I would a at least another 256.

HL came out in 1998 so I don`t think the RAM will help at all, but it cheap now so it won`t hurt either.
