View Full Version : Optimize Direcway Satellite throughput?

My 10 day old Direcway 2-way Satellite will run over 700k bits/sec download on the Bandwidthplace speed test but my throughput with proxy off is only 50k bits/sec. With the proxy on, throughput increases to a high of about 100k bits/sec.
My OS is Windows 98 and the receive signal is excellent (75-80 consistently).
I have tried the various tweaks suggested by the SpeedGuide TCP/IP analyzer, installing them through the use of the Dr. TCP device that is available on the Broadbandtips website.
Part of the problem may be that I am using the new SAT MEX 5 satellite 1250 transponder. The tweaks suggested on Broadbandtips for the Direcway system are for transponders 1410 and 990 on satellite G-11. They are: MTU 1460, scaling on, time-sampling off, selective acks on, path MTU discovery off, black hole detection off, max dup acks 3, TTL 64, TCP Receive 224360.
I have tried recalculating the TCP Receive to a multiple of the MSS as instructed by the SpeedGuide analyzer and used a value of 477120 based on an MSS of 1420. Still no improvement. In fact, according to the SpeedGuide TCP/IP analysis, the tweaks do not seem to affect anything when I have the proxy on.
Can anyone tell me where I might find the correct tweaks for this system or tell me if there is some other issue?
Go here (http://www.broadbandnuts.com/) they have a file for satelille
Download Cablenut 4.08, On desktop will be a Cablenut folder, click on this folder, select ccs, then select
Cable,DSL or 56K or Satellite (select your ccs file-settings)
Select normal or fast This will bring up adjuster, blank boxes just mean default values are being used, Please save to registry and REBOOT anytime you change value in adjuster. Please check back for updates or reading.
WIN XP users use W2k ccs files
Also you have to experiment to see which settings work best for you, normal or fast cable settings, I have seen people with 400 CPU get better speed with fast settings. If it does not work for you, go back to normal cable settings.
(NOTE) inside Cablenut folder on desktop it says adjuster if you click on Cablenut on desktop. RIGHT click on adjuster and select shortcut to desktop.
Check back often for updates, tips and reading

Thanks for the lead to Cablenut.
I installed the adjuster and applied the Win 98, satellite tweaks. BTW, I did not notice anything about a "normal" or "fast" choice.
Download speed is still fast (700k bits/sec) and throughput remains around 100k bits/sec). I am now running 1500 mtu, 1460 mss, 125560 Rwin.
Well in search engine try to find some ISDN tweaks and see if it gets better:)

Thanks again for your suggestions. I did check out all the relevant ISDN tweaks that I found referenced in this and other forums. C/Net had quite a list and I checked them all. About the only changes that I really needed to make was to increase my cache and defrag my hard drive.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
How do do speed test
1. The best time is early in the morning (3 AM - 6 AM)
2. Make sure defrag has been run so no files are fragmented
3. Delete Temp internet files, not while testing, but after each test. IE browser, click tools, internet options, click on delete files and no this will not harm system, just get rid of temp files
4. Go to a fast server such as www.happypuppy.com and click on 10 demos, select a LARGE file to download (not all of it , just most of it, before you click cancel) this will show you how fast you are downloading, it's not going to be quick except except early in morning when not many people on net. I recommend you go to http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/nsl.htm and download Net State live, run this while downloading as it will give you avg of your download speed, really all you need on Net Stat is incoming data, incoming totals and Local machine, right click on Net Stat anywhere, stactics and check these 3 items, the rest need not be checked unless you want them, all you care about is average. Another fast download site is ftp.lucasarts.com
Put system defrag in scheduled tasks to run everyday.
5. Probably the most important, nothing can be running during test, no firewalls, no virus stuff, no ICQ, no AIM (some of you may have to go into BIOS to disable virus scanner, nothing running except Net Stat live
Scheduled tasks will run disk defrag, 98 & SE in Taskbar, WIN ME in control panel
The people who want speed surfing or doing whatever must close all other programs.
Or if you wish you may go to www.testmyspeed.com and do one of the online tests, these vary to much for me but you may like them.
:)
If you had not given out those bad grades and had to move to the woods, you could have Cable, lol,jk:) :) :) :)
