View Full Version : Trying to determining where my ping problem resides

Hi all:

I have cable modem 800/800 capped. I run Win98 SE for all of my games. Recently I've been getting ping rates of 1500+ on UT and Q3. I have done a lot of reading on this entire site and it has been very helpful. Anyway, here is a partial tracert to the server I play on (We're with the same ISP & Cable COs, just 45 mi apart). My ISP's routers don't respond to pings. This was done off-peak @ 12:45 AM EST today.

1 10 ms 10 ms 30 ms 10.229.50.1
2 10 ms 10 ms 20 ms [24.229.40.182]
3 160 ms 20 ms 30 ms [207.44.122.214]
4 130 ms 30 ms 10 ms [24.229.12.229]

During peak hours, it's not unusual to see hops 3 & 4 @ 800ms - 1700ms

I spoke to tech support several times:

First time: rep told me ping wasn't important to games.(got rid of him real fast)

Second time: I asked for supervisor, he told me to download all OS patches and Game patches and blamed the game. Since I did this months ago, I told him I think it's thier network.

Third time: Finally get a rep who knew what he was doing. He was getting similar ping times at hops 3 & 4, but all he could tell me was they're evaluating new equipment.

Basically, I want to be sure this is the ISP's head-end router and not the CableCo's gateway/router. I don't want to "bark up the wrong tree" . Would a new modem & IP address help the problem?

Thanks
Jim

The routers at 2, 3, and 4 all belong to PenTelData.

I thought so, but since I'm new to cable and networking, I figured it wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion. It looks, like I have to wait until they get some additional equipment.
