Hello all, I have been an MMORPG gamer for close to three years now (Ultima Online and currently Dark Age of Camelot). I am by no means quitting these games but sometimes a guy just needs to make stuff go "boom". My girlfriend's dad recently picked up RTCW and raves about it daily. I was thinking of picking up a copy to try out a new online experience. My problem, I'm a total newbie when it comes to FPS's online. I have played Quake I and II and dabbled in a few others but never enough to really get to know them.

Is there a good site I can go to for FPS newbies?

Am I biting off more than I can chew by jumping right into RTCW?

I'm sure the competition is just as crazy as it is in Ultima and DAoC but everytime I watch him play it looks like a total "run and gun" blast. Any advice or info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Go for RTCW. You will really enjoy it. I am currently working my way through the single player and I'm addicted.

O is it ever settled. I just DL'd the RTCW demo and died a million times trying to get past the room with all the suits of armor, but was it ever fun. I forgot how much fun it can be to just blast away (That mouser packs a helluva punch :D ). I managed to dig up a few secret areas and muddle my way through parts of that first level. Can't wait to get at it tommorow with the sound on (GF's trying to sleep making EAX at full blast an excercise in getting yelled at). If it's this much fun single player, I can't wait to see multi.

Now anyone have any ideas how I can keep up a job, a social life, a girlfriend, black & white, dark ages of camelot, giants: citizen Kabuto and now RTCW with only 24 hour days available to me?

Here is a hint..... not all levels are completed by shooting and blasting everything. Stealth, waiting and the knife are keys at times.

Half-Life is pretty damn addicting. and with the MODS available it stays interesting for quite some time. The single player version is great fun, but when your ready to step up to the plate and d/l Counter-strike, kiss sleep and a social life goodbye(i really miss sleep!)

I already get no sleep due to DAoC and was already used to it from Ultiama Online. I think I have been in a perpetually tired zombie-like-state since late 1997 :p

UT by far is the most unique. Not that it's the most fun, as I have more fun with CS, but it's a bit different. In CS, you can't jump around shooting while your double strafing in the air, etc. and expect to hit every bullet. However, you can in UT and people play UT online REALLY FAST, like 150% the normal game speed, but it's still a bit fun. For LAN games, UT is by far the best if you have a few computers on the network because of bot support.
