Hi guys

Running Win2k Professional and trying to get some security updates from the windows update site.

Once it starts to download, it stops abruptly and gives me this message.

"Could not be installed because of an unknown error (-2147012889)"

What on earth does that mean?

is it related to cookies?

Or is it a problem with microsofts site at present?

please help if you can..i need these updates!! :(

Thanks

Tuz

Did you install something from there and didn't reboot?

nah dude its freaky.

Like ive rebooted many times and it still wont update so i doubt thats the reason.

It must be explainable.

A bit of further info.....using sygate, and trying to autoupdate another client PC (which goes via my PC), that client PC also gets the error. :(

I had about the same problem on 98SE after I formatted a couple of weeks ago, and went to get all the security updates, after I got and installed my browser updates.

It downloaded fine, started the install automatically, then abruptly stopped (with a message of unknown error)
Tried a few times with no luck.

A few days went by and I got a bright idea - I deleted (from Dos), all files in C:\Windows Update Setup Files (that's where I put the IE update) deleted the IE cache, and all files in the c:\windows temp dir and got it to work.

I'm not sure if what I did made it work, or there was a problem with the update site, or a problem with the files that got fixed.

I think it's the site itself.
I've been trying for a couple of days now just to get the darn site to load with in 4 minutes. Pings and Traces just fine, but page loading is slower then a dial up connection!

I just went to win update and it wa screamin fast.

You guys probably have corrupted ActiveX Controls. Doing what Norm did will get rid of tne corrupted files. New ones will get downloaded during the "ride" to the Update page with the list of availables.

Another common cause of trouble there is Norton Anti-Virus running during the download of those Active X controls that sacn your HD for previous MS updates.

I just tried it again without changing anything and it is working like it should now. Maybe too much traffic on the other times I tried? I don't know, but it's fine now.
Thanks TonyT
