When trying to install certain programs I get this error message:

Has any one encountered this and how can I fix it or get around it

I have WinXP ver. 2600

here found this in microsoft's news groups

Here is a fix posted by Emilio Márque. A word of caution however is to back up your registry before making ANY changes!

Solution for the Error 1606. Could not access Network Location. <Common
Administrative Tools> .All Users\.

1. Startup > Execute... > regedit ---> Accept
2. In the Registry go to:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders
3. Common Administrative Tools must have the value: C:\WINDOWS\All Users
4. In the Registry go to:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders
5. Common Administrative Tools must have the value: %SYSTEMROOT%\All Users

Bye.

Emilio Márquez.

my error I was thinking you add both keys but you cant... so, I donno why he said to use both of those for the same key.

So neither of those worked? you did reboot after chaning those.. ya?

did you see that Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility in the other link I posted, there's one for XP

Also what is it your trying to install and did you "upgrade" from 98/Me or something? It seems in the MS newsgroups most posts about this error are ppl who upgraded.

I did an upgrade. I have had good success with the various upgrades from Win95 thru WinXP. Ofcourse you have to go on various cleanup missions, but I think I would rather do that than try to remember, reestablish all the various changes, tweaks and so on that I have done thru out the years
