is it even needed for anything? I have it on 2 of my 4 computers on my home lan and tcp/ip and netbeui on the other 4. Is there a benefit of having ipx/spx or should i remove it?

IPX/SPX is only used in a few old games. Only install it if you have a game that requires it.

IPX is the protocol for Novell networks. Windows has their generic IPX support built in as a protocol. You can also make pure Windows peer to peer networks using IPX as the protocol, instead of NetBEUI. But there is little reason to, unless you are running some apps that need it, for example some old online games. It's chatty and bogs down your network more than NetBEUI.

Not needed, clogging your LAN, yank it.
