We have a new XP w/ CNet ethernet card and a USB DSL modem. Old machine is 98SE with Kingston ethernet card. We have an ethernet hub connecting the two. We have run the networking wizard, ran the disk it created on the old machine but the two do not see each other. Not on network places, cannot ping, can't share internet connection, nothing. The cards and hub appear to be functioning properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your setup should look like this with a hub. Modem to uplink port on hub> pc to port 1 & port 2, unless port 1 is next to the uplink port and auto switched, then use 2 & 3. Now you say you're using a USB modem. What's that connected to? Sounds like you're running the modem to the XP rig's USB. Please describe your network configuration (i.e.- the head bone connected to the neck bone, etc) And do you have file and print sharing enabled? Have you shared the drives? Need more info.

Thanks Eddie. I have a Speedstream USB DSL modem that is connected to the USB port on the XP machine. I have set up that machine to internet share via the LAN nic (CNet, came installed with the new XP machine) which is getting assigned the 192.168.0.1 IP address. The LAN nic is connected to the hub as is the 98 SE machine. I forced an IP address of 192.168.0.2 to the nic (Kingston, a couple of years old) (brand new hub and brand new cables) on the 98SE machine. I set up the 98 machine to be shared. Both are assigned the same workgroup name. I ran the xp wizard, ran the setup disk on the 98 machine as well ... but still they do not seem to see each other ... not in network places and cannot ping. I would note that when I look at the status of the XP nic, it says that it is sending but shows zero received. Any ideas or more info needed? Thanks.

Check your bindings in Network Neighborhood/Places. File and Print Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks should be bound to the two NICs.
Try switching the XP connection between the uplink port and a numbered port on the hub.
Next test the 98 NIC by pinging 127.0.0.1 (local host). Should have real short ping times.
Does the 98 box have a USB port? Try connecting it to the modem using the settings from the XP box to verify that it can surf.
Not using a crossover cable anywhere, are you?
Make sure while you're looking at the bindings that TCP/IP for the modem isn't bound to File and Print Sharing for security's sake.

Thanks again for your suggestions. I had the idea yesterday to just buy a new ethernet card for the older 98SE machine since these cards are less than $20. I put in a new Linksys card last night and everything is set! Thanks also for having me double check to see that file and print sharing are not bound to the modem. Glad I found this site for assistance.
