Cable Disconnected Message

I have a brand new box w/XP Home and a factory installed ethernet nic that I want to connect to our old 98SE computer which also has an ethernet nic. I have tried putting in two different CAT5 cables but the XP lan connection keeps saying the cable is disconnected. Both machines say that the nics are functioning properly and the lights would bear that out. Any ideas? Keep buying new cables?

Are you using a crossover cable?

Yes, I assumed I wanted crossover because I am not using a hub, just going direct to the other computer ... was I right on that assumption? Thanks.

Right choice. Try both hooked straight into the modem to verify the NICs are OK.
edit: straight cable of course
