IRC and Linksys Router

hey everyone... im having an issue that I was hoping to get some help on. Check out this link if you will :

Once in a blue moon it would take me several tried to log on....but eventually it always pushed through. I always attibuted that to the busy times of the IRC servers. This being through all 4x routers that I've had. Actually just 3 of them, since I haven't used IRC since I've gotten my Nexland router, doubt I'll ever use it again. Just remembering back.

"Can't resolve hostname".....just made me think, wonder if it's looking for the DNS host name on your computer, which the router can also spoof when you set it up for some cable connections.

Have you ever tried going with the manually entered IP on your workstation. Give it a static IP, like 192.168.1.11, 255.255.255.0 subnet, gateway is 192.168.1.1, leave WINS disabled, enter your computer name for host, your ISP's formal domain name for domain, and enter your ISP's two DNS servers. I've always done my IP info manually, I don't like the lightweight DHCP service of routers. And I never seem to have the problems many peeps have.

DOH! Thanks for that Hoov, I in fact don't have it forwarded. Now im feeling alot better. Ill test it when I get home from work tonight.

Odd I use IRC most every night with no problems through my 4 port Linksys....My wife does as well....Its never even burped.

What IRC client are you using? We use MIRC, works fine.

Nothing forwarded and nothing in the DMZ.

Oh one other thing. If you dont have your Ident Server turned on in the IRC client it give that error as well.

I am using the latest version of mIRC also. In most cases people who have dealt with routers alot would never have had my issue, but I have had my router for all of 1 week and i'm still learning how to use it.

All I had to do was forward port 113 over and I got right in.

Thats still odd I dont have anything forwarded....I did flash the ROM to the latest version, guess that could have some effect. It may stand as one of the great unanswered questions of our time ..... :rolleyes:

Hello there Nudbug,

The forwarding of port 113 allows for ident to check your pc. Certain servers on IRC require ident ability, such as Dalnet I believe. Maybe you have been using servers that do not require ident.

Ok thats even stranger...I use Dalnet and I have the Ident server enabled and it works.....Nothing forwarded...Could it be because I have the server enabled on the client???....Maybe it's working sorta like HTTP???? A outbound request opens the port for a reply from the host?

I ran the ident server on my pc but it would not work until I forwarded the port. That is odd.
