is it easy to undo the changes made by the 'tweaking' programs...
Sure! Especially with SpeedGuide's Optimizer! (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60065)
It's always recommended to back your registry before trying any of the tweakers, cause that's what they do: Tweak your registry. I never have though. ;) The nice thing about SG's software is that it lets you backup the part of the registry it's tweaking, rather than the entire registry.
I found it worked great for me, so that's why I recommend it. I used to use the CableNut software, but then when I switched to XP, I didn't need it at all, But, then @home went down the toilet and in comes caps with ATT and I was far off the cap speeds. I ran SG's optimizer and now I run right at the cap speeds consistently.
You may, however, experience different results as every system is different. You just have to experiment a little to see what works for your particular system.
The guys over in the Tweaking Forum know their stuff, so I'd visit there too for some great tips and tricks.
