i am currently staying at a house off campus that has a computer and cable modem paided for by the university. the cable is by a local provider not thru the university system.
im a wanting to unplug the univs comp and hook my box up to their cable modem. i currently have @home or whatever their are now at my apartment so my computer is cable ready. what must i do to get it to work?

so far on other message boards, ive heard 1. just change the computer name and workgroup (didnt work) and 2. pull the univ nic and put in my computer (havent tried b/c i dont want to mess with their machine)

i read a post on this subject from a few days ago about setting up cable on a new computer using xp. its late so i dont want to fiddle around using that post as a starting point. both computers are running win 98.

thx

1)make sure that the network card are properly installed and working, test by pinging back by typing "ping 127.0.0.1"
at the dos prompt.
2)Check that tcp/ip is installed and also check with the ISP if u need any extra configuration such as dns name or whatsoever.
3)Switch off both ur computer and modem. Make sure that the modem is turn off first and check the led shows that a connection had been made to the ISP.next turn on your cpu and give it a try :)
