My desktop (running XP) is working fine hooked to a Cable modem via a 4 port Linksys router. All I want to do is access the internet with my laptop through the router. My problem is that my laptop (running Win2K Pro) is connected to the router via a CAT 5 cable is getting activity but it isn't getting any packets. I am using a Fast Ethernet 10/100 network card set to automatic DHCP. It appears to be a small adjustment somewhere, but I am stumped. Could someone offer a suggestion or resolution?
Thanks

Have you checked to see if that cable is bad? How about if you give your laptop a static IP address? Could it be that autosense doesn't work? Try putting it on 100 Mb full duplex/half whatever you want and see if it picks up.

double check the cable..

I'll take that back TRIPLE check the cable...
LMAO

I had probs when I got my router..I checked everything...except the cable..

it turned out that
Comp one comp worked fine when connected to the Cable modem (1ombps) but when I connected it to the router, I always got timeouts destination unreachables..

it had me stumped for days...

don't remember how I finally figured it out..but it turned out that I messed up one of the ends on the Cat 5 for that comp

I have switched CAT5 cables several times and I have made sure that the Workgroup name is the same on both systems. I am still plugging at it to no avail.

GO TO NETWORKCARD PROPERTIES (ON THE LAPTOP) MAKE SURE MEDIATYPE IS IN AUTOSENSE OR IF ITS HOOKED UP TO THE ROUTER IT SHOULD BE 100MPS

Log into the router page.
Click the DHCP link at top.
What's it say for "number of DHCP users"?

1. I haven't hooked the laptop directly to the cable modem because I don't want the machine to be seen by my ISP provider.

2. I did have the NIC set for Autosense, so I changed the setting to 100 Mps, it still is showing 1 packet sent 0 packet received.

3. I changed the default setting of DHCP users from 50 to 4 when I setup the router.

At the prompt on the laptop, ipconfig /all will show you the IP properties, if it's seeing the Linksys, you'll see a 192.168.1.1XX address, assuming you have default Linksys setup. If you see a 169.XXX.XXX.XXX...that means it's not reaching the Linksys, don't even bother trying any further like internet access, or pinging, or hitting the admin page from there. Something like the NIC, or cable, isn't working properly.

ipconfig /release will release your lease
ipconfig /renew will try to renew
ipconfig /all will show all

You did try a different patch cable? Since it's a laptop, you can easily move it to where another good working computer is, and try it's cable.
You did try moving ports...you're not plugged into the uplink port, or the port that shares the uplink if you're uplink is used?

Try adjusting your NIC configuration, some mixtures of hardware don't always work well together. Try setting it do half duplex, and 10Base speed....just to test it. Do you know for sure that your NIC is indeed good?

Are you sure you don't have extra LAN profiles?

I have tried each setting for the NIC (per your request) to no avail. I have tried several CAT5 cables, and this is a new NIC card (not to say that it is good). Of course, you are right, as long as this card isn't sending or receiving any packets, it cannot Ping anything except itself. GGGRRRR....should I return the Card and try a different brand since I am using a Linksys router and a Linksys PC Card in my desktop? Not that the card in my desktop has anything to do with it. Oh yeah, I disabled all LAN devices except this one on the laptop, but the result is the same. Again, I have tried every setting for the NIC card with the same results. I cannot see the laptop on the LAN from the primary system (desktop), is this a problem. Should I see it? Should I be able to Ping it from the desktop that is working fine? As you can tell, I am a little new at this. I really appreciate you guys and gals helping me through this process, as I am always in search of knowledge.

To answer you question, I read the book several times about the Linksys connections. No, I am not using the number 1 port which is a shared port with the uplink, of which I do not use. I have the laptop hooked into port 2 and the desktop hooked into port 3. I am only trying to allow a second system (laptop) to hook into the router so that it can surf the web. At this point, I am not even concerned about it being seen from my primary system (desktop).

Oh yeah, by the way, I did change the desktop's LAN IP to be 10.10.10.100 and changed the router to be 10.10.10.1, and I changed the laptop to be 10.10.10.102

I am still getting the same results whether I set the laptop to receive a dynamic IP or set it with a static IP. I did notice that when I set it for dynamic that the IP is something other than 10.10.10.102

I guess you should exchange your laptop's NIC and get another one. Let's see if you got a dead one. Exchange it for another one, and if it's still no go, try another brand.

You guys are worth your weight in gold... I returned the Linksys card and bought a Belkin one in it's place. Both systems are working fine and I am like a pig in slop, since my wife can get off of my butt about her system not being hooked up to the router. Whew. I love you guys, you just don't know. My house is now habitable again. Happy Holidays to you all.
