View Full Version : Help configuring Linksys with @home cable service in MD
When I first stated using my linksys router with @home cable service months ago, everything worked beautifully, but in the last couple of months I have had problems web surfing, takes to long to start loading pages(sometimes it can't), email is slow, and download speeds vary.
I want to make sure all my settings are correct with my hardware.
Win2000 SP2
RCA Cable Modem
Linksys 4 port cable dsl router
I obtain an IP address automatically, should I specify it?
Do I need a WAN MAC address?(have not used one in the past)
I have not installed @homes software on my box, should I?
Should I use a proxy, and if so how do I find out the correct address and port?
How do you disable DNS in Win 2000?
Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Derek

Hi Derek. Are you sure that nothing has changed on your end (added a new machine, added new filtering/firewall software)?
I use DHCP on the WAN interface and set all my boxes up as static on the LAN side. Only the router needs to be a DHCP client
I am on comcast@home in alexandria va and they have never used MAC addresses before.
I would definitely avoid @home software. It is like AOL software in that it never sems to completely uninstall...
Proxy is up to you. Certain high volume pages are cached on an @home server(s). This makes those pages load faster but others will actually load a little slower. I recommend against it.
You don't really want to disable DNS. Otherwise you will have to use IP addresses instead of site/host names to get anywhere.
I might try writing down all of my settings on both the PC and the router. Then connect the PC directly to the modem. That should help you determine whether the router is involved. If you can connect normally without the router, start looking at your pc configuration or call TS and have them test your line.
Have fun,

quik question:
I'm in Fairfax, using CoxRR. I get consistant as promised by RR, 1.5 Mb cap down and 256Kb up.
For future reference, if I ever move to Alex, what knid of service and speeds do you get from Comcast?
Comcast@Home: 3 Mb / 128 Kb
Comcast: 1.5 Mb / 128 Kb
That's the new bandwidth policy that they're sticking with (when Comcast leaves @Home throughout various cities). You can check it with yourself here (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/comcast)
Remember that after Feb 28, you'll only get 1.5 Mb / 128 Kb from Comcast, unless they change it...
By the way, the switch over from @Home to Comcast's own network will be around Jan. 21st or so.
