ok here is my question. I have one of my computers that I use as an FTP server, tonight im going to be setting up my new router. Do I need to setup the computer that has the FTP server on it with the 1 external IP address or can I give out one of the Internal IP's that my router will create?

Thanks for any help

Can't stand to see you hanging out there for so long. I am going beyond what I know here (a short trip indeed), but is this where IP forwarding comes into play? Perhaps some of our sharper non-cold medicine swallowing friends can help out.
And what can I take over the counter to clear the snot/cement out of my miserable head without feeling like I can fly?

The router will receive the one external or public IP, and all the machines on your net will get addresses assigned by the router.

You will need to set up all the machines on your lan with static addresses, then forward the appropriate ports for FTP to the FTP machine.

Roody,
The setup depends on what router you have. Basically you will need to forward port 21 to the local pc that will be running the ftp server. This is done usually in one of the router web setup screens.

That way you would give out your external ip address to people that you want to access your server. They hit your router and the router see that they are trying to access port 21 then the router redirects the data to your local pc that you specified in the forwarding.

So you forward port 21 to your local pc, ie. 192.168.0.2

Good luck
