This hasn't been done for a while.....

List your favorite software firewall and why?

Zonealarm, cuz it's free. ;)

ZoneAlarm, cause it's free, easy, and it has a big red STOP button :)
Oh, and it works !!

black ice defender hands down. I found zone alarm to be to weak for my taste and black ice uses less resourses.

lord_yuri, do you realize that BlackIce doesn't block outgoing traffic, only incoming traffic? So anything trying to access the internet, BI doesn't monitor...it only monitors things trying to get in. ZoneAlarm however monitors both ways.

Tiny is my favourite hands down. It's free and provides great protection if you know rulesets.

My friend's Linux firewall/proxy.

Who or what is MP? You?

Ok.....so why is BI better? I'd agree that it's easy to use. Still, there is no monitoring of outbound traffic. Not an issue as long as you know your not installing spyware, or gotten infected with something or running warez that try and connect to websites all the time.

I use BID.

No real need to monitor outgoing traffic if you are certain that nothing has gotten in to begin with! That's what antivirus apps are for! Also, if one never plays with ad supported software. There is absolutely NO WAY I can have suspicious outbound traffic because I am aware of what is inbound, I do not use spyware and I scan all downloads manually as well as all inserted disks/removable media.

My Favorite Firewall: Axent Raptor v6.5 (It's now a Symantec product. I'm crossing my fingers that they don't f it up like the At Guard technology.) So far, v6.5.2 was a release that only featured a packaging and documentation "upgrade". :)

My Favorite Personal "Firewall" Port Monitor: BlackIce Defender

It's easy to config. It's not a resource hog. It doesn't matter that outgoing traffic isn't monitored, I don't run adware or IM systems on my network. Nor do I download lots of garbage and install it on my machine(s). My only gripe with BID is that it can only deal with ports and not traffic types. I would really like to see a release that has at least, limited packet type filtering capabillity. But, I'm not bitching, the software is only 40 bucks.

*looks at router* I'd say that is my fav "firewall". Use it and ZA, cuz its free, and I can configure it oh-so-easy. Also lets me know when a proggie is trying to access the net.

ZA pro, effective firewall with flexibility to tweak to my liking.

TonyT,

Do you have a link for the software?

Thorazine,
You can get a copy form my download (http://www.computerglitch.net/node.php?id=5) section, under packet sniffing. Also a link is provided to the home of analyzer.

Norton Internet Security....... more than just a firewall, blocks the annoying ads and pop ups.

guy_de_lusignan

I used to use a combination of Norton Internet Security, ZA, and Sygate, but now that I have my SOHOWare BroadGuard router with Stateful Packet Inspection, anti-DoS and NAT, I'll ditch ZA. I still like Sygate's control of outbound traffic, and Norton's ad blocking. I also use The Cleaner and Trojan Shield for trojans (as well as NAV of course). For added security, I never post to discussion groups without passing through an anonymous proxy. Security isn't about any particular product, it's a state of mind. In my case, that's paranoia.:D

BlackIce all the way!!!

Little resources, very easy to use, not annoying like some other firewalls (ZA). Does its job perfectly, including a trace back of the attacker.

BlackIce dosen't stop anything though!

BID with Tiny. They work well togather and do not use alot of resourses. Have been learning Sygate and it looks real promising.

When configured correctly, it blocks all possible attacks.
(but with any firewall, there are exceptions)

I've had great luck w/Sonic Wall products. SPA, and their own IPSec VPN are pretty incredible. Secure; fast; easy to configure, and great monitoring / reporting tools. Pretty $$$ though

Brick wall is pretty fire proof. Concrete block works too.

All kidding aside zonealarm all the way.

yeah I thought the hair color was a nice touch. :p

I still have'nt answered this question....

So, here goes. It sounds like we are talking windows o/s for this topic so.
For my win2k system I use BI and Analyzer (if you can sneek a packet pass my rules you should be cracking somthing more than my system with nothing more than uncompiled software and pictures of pretty ladies).

However my favorite wall is the Cisco PIX 515-R Firewall ( I have only configured the 515 and found it to be straight forward ) though I have seen the 525 in a larger environment but I had no user - system interaction.

greEd

Hey greEd
Like the colour.. did you get a perm also......lol.... jk pal
Just for the record....I have an SMC Barricade + Tiny + AVG and have seen nothing coming in or out. The SMC is NOT available for a ping on the WAN side. IMHO if they can't see you, they go somewhere else.

greED,

I finally got around to looking at your downloads page. Woohoo! nmap for NT, I'd been looking that port for some time. Lots of goodies on that page.

Thanks again :)

Bla Bla Bla Bla....IMHO

if you use Windoze...98/2000

Conseal.. by far is the best!
And it,s not free! You have to spend some coinage!
BUT if your a newbie stick to the easy to use marketed brands...
BlackIce, Zonealarm..stick to the pro versions if possible...

OK Start puking..............OH i might add any firewall can be EXPLOITED.. The more time the user puts in to proper upkeep (upgrades, rules) the better. Exploits change about as many times as U blink...............dot

Another vote for norton personal firewall 2000 Ver 2.0

It works great with all the windows NT versions , and does not create problems to other software ..

Its a friendly system utility .

Have Norton's Personal Firewall 2002. Loaded it in Win 2000 Pro but had problems with my DSL connection. Currently using XP's wall and pretty happy with it. I may go back and load Norton now that I am under XP.

The following information is stuff i have heard.

First of all zone alarm is weak because the configuration files can be edited remotely this means that you need to password them, along with that.

Norton firewall is hard to setup but i have heard is effective.
No matter how much protection you buy a computer is never secure but it makes it harder for a hacker.

Windows firewall is crap.

It is an old thread and I lurke around here often, just don't post much. I switched to Outpost Pro and have had excellent luck with it since version 2.1. There is a great forum with a lot of Outpost savy folks to help you with any problems you might have. That was a big factor in me switching to Outpost.
