Hi I recently downloaded an mp3 decoder and a dvd decoder for windows media player from cyberlink and it worked but i couldn't zoom to get rid of pana. so i downloaded the new power dvd 4.0 and now my dvd player hesitates like it does not have enough memory or video mem to push it but i know it does because it has always worked before and never skipped( i could be surfing web and watching movie at same time on it)The CPU usage is winding out at very high %ages and i have a feeling that is the culprit
What is a normal cpu usage for running a dvd without any apps in background?
Mine is hitting in the high nineties to 100
System Specs:
1100 mhz
512mb ram
32 mb nvidia tnt2 m64 with 21.83 drivers
16x toshiba dvd player
Please help

Hi there....about your CPU...are you running the system monitor utility to get these %'s ??? I was just running that utility the other day while playing some graphics demo's and running simple app's. I noticed that the "kernal processor usage" meter seemed to hit 100% easily on the measly graphics demo's and often times hit 100% on other app's as well. Hell, it even spiked up to 80% when doing things like searching through C drive and opening folders. I think the utility is non-functioning, or I just wasn't reading/using it correctly. I have a pentIII 450 with 512 megs of RAM and I just don't think doing what I was doing should have been that "hard" on it. Lemme know how you got those figures though.

It's funny because your system specs are almost exactly like mine...except for processor speed. I have a 16x Toshiba DVD/CD-ROM, 512 megs of RAM, and a Diamond V770 Ultra graphics card which utilizes the Riva TNT2 chipset. I also have skip when I play DVD's on my system, so I stopped playing them on the comp and switched to the TV :D . I use Zoransoft DVD player. I never figured out the skip. I do recall reading a post once about videos or DVD's or something where someone mentioned monitor cycle rates, or framerates or something like that...but I'm unsure as to what is causing you trouble. Your processor shouldn't be having any trouble handling the load of a DVD movie. If I had to venture a guess I'd say it was your monitor or a driver issue. Make sure you have latest video drivers.

It is normal (I think). In my system, I installed windows 98 SE and Windows 2000. I can use Windows 98 SE to watch DVD without any problem. But in Windows 2000, it skips. I found that the difference in the 2 OSs is win98 sets monitor cycle rates as default, and win2000 I have to select one (I select 75 Hz, there is no default option in win2K). My video card is gForce 2 GTR 32MB DDR.
