I have an XP Pro pc networked to a windows 98 machine via a straight through cable connection. Recently I lost the ability to access shares on the XP machine from the client 98 machine, however I can still access the internet. Every time I try to access a share it is connecting as IPC$. It was working fine for like 2 3 months. Any idea on what happenned and what to do?

Probably you changed your password and/or logon name on the 98 PC. Or, you changed sharing permissions on XP.

SOMETHING has changed. Either you changed permissions, or you changed the name of the share. the IPC$ share is the adminstrative root share of the drive. It is enabled by default when file and print sharing is enabled. You cannot access this share.

You need(ed) to create a "New Share", and name it whatever, with permissions set for access. My guess is somehow this has been changed.

What are your current permissions when you viewing sharing on the root of this drive?
