i have 2 drives, drives C: and D:, well...when i go to defrag the C: drive..it won't defrag it with the windows built in defragmenter and norton utilities 2002 defragmenter. wtf man it scans but it won't get to the 100% mark. How would i fix this?

thz buddies

BTW, the D: drive works fine

Try this....
open scandisk>select thorough scan>UNcheck auto fix errors>click start.

Why?

Defrag uses scandisk first to check for errors. As Scandisk errors include any file over 66 characters long, this will also affect Defrag.
You will get popup advice of each error stating what it is.
When Defrag gets to the long names it reacts the same as scandisk and stalls or returns to start again.

This may not be your problem but it is a place to start, one that has caused problems here.

Croc.

And what snake said too.;)

Right click anywhere in the open desktop, drill down to properties, then click on the screensavers tab, right under where it says screen saver with the radio arrow, select NONE, click apply and o.k., see if that works. You have to close all running programs or it'll keep starting over and over again.

Boot into "Safe Mode" and start from there.
Not sure on WinME but in W98 as you reboot keep tapping the "F8" key gets you there.
That should stop all running apps and then try the scandisk & defrag with the settings suggested above.
( should there be another option to get into SafeMode in WinME please post. I haven't used it., )

You can boot into safe mode by holding the shift key down.

Forgetful that's the ctrl key! Hell just boot in to windows. Run msconfig then click advance the click enable start up menu. On your next boot it will ask you how to boot. Just choose safemode. after defrag is done change it back
