View Full Version : Multiple partition help needed
I currently have an NTFS and Linux partition. I would like to install win98 on a fat32 partition. I have made the partition, however when I try to install 98 on it, setup wants to format the entire disk as fat32. That would be undesirable.
Is there a way to install 98 on a disk that has the other partitions? If so, does it have to be the first partition on the drive? I keep getting errors if I try to move or resize the main NTFS partition with Partition Magic.
Thanks.
The boot partition has to be fat to boot 98 from somewhere else!

If i remember correctly, you should be able to convert that nfts drive to fat32. Then you should have better luck. I am curious, why would you want to put some much strain on your system? please dont tell me it's so you can get an extra few FPS in your favorite game.
hey all,
u do realize that if u did install win98, it writes over your mbr so u will have to make a boot disc for linux and then re-write your lilo file, or somehow get it to dual boot after. (just a thought i had) goodluck
Thanks for the responses. I realize its unusual... Win2000 doesn't recognize the serial port for my joystick, Win98 does.
I use Boot magic and/or PQboot to switch O/S's. That coupled with the linux being installed on a logical partition, there's no probs with the mbr.
I need the NTFS partition, as my other networked machines are also NTFS.
I mostly just want to learn and troubleshoot multiple O/S from one machine (tech in training).
Thanks again.
hi iaus10,
u do need fat to run win98(i think) and even if u did run fat on one of your systems, it doesn't matter within the network, u can still share files ect. My server is ntfs, yet this puter i'm tapping on is fat, i can save, share, map the drive without any problems.
hey pains2,
I realize FAT or FAT32 is required to run 98. Interesting sbout your server, I was under the impression that drives formatted as FAT couldn't read NTFS.
I just need to give up on this project, or totally reformat and install the FAT before 1024.
Or... I should just quit being a cheap a$$ and buy another HD:)
hi again,
My server is ntfs by defualt. For my puter i choose to use fat on my hard drive becuase it's tri-boot with 98/win2k/xp so it's easier that way. What u can't do is format 1 partition fat on the same hard drive and then format another partition on the same hard drive with ntfs becuase u wouldn't be able to "see" insisde the partition, it'll always say that it's not formated and would u like to format it now, but over a network everything goes through your OS so it makes the right adjustments. Think about it, a multi platformed network where Mac's, Windows and Unix all co-excist is possable becuase of the protocols u install when install a network, not because u formated all your drives with fat or ntfs or even a mac format.;)
You're right, brainfart on my part. I was thinking about the ability to assign permissions to files, using NTFS.
Good times.

Hi.
Since win98 (in my opinion) is the most intensive on partition issues, you should/should've install/installed win98 first, and make sure it works properly, then go ahead with the other O/S's on partitions; Just a suggestion :)
bye.
yep, woulda shoulda coulda...:)
I know the ideal setup would have been to install it first on the HD. I should have just asked if anyone had experienced errors using Partition Magic to move/resize volumes. I've been trying to do just that.
Here's what I have now:

Here's what I want:

There's an error occuring when the batch is being executed. This has been my dilemma. Like I said, I just need to buy another HD and be done with it. Thanks for all the responses, I'm continually impressed with the brainpower in this forum.:D
