i do a lot of online gaming. i have RR in Texas and have had it about a year. my problem is that the latency goes to 500 or more about every 30-45 seconds and if this happens during online gaming poof ur out or dead. i down loaded Pingplotter and plotted sending tracert signals every 2.5 seconds (have varied times with essentially same results significant packet loss and high latency 2-5 times per minute. according to the plotter (intermitent) my first hop usually is the worst with high lat loss and packet loss up to 30% if it doesnt err out completely. if u run just reg tracert you have to run it back to back to get the same results since the problem is somewhat intermitent. contacted tech support with little help from them. is this a normal cause if it is i may as well go back to dial-up and just check e-mail. note: i have 3 machines (all high end) on cat5 network and hooked all directly to cable modem with same results. have recycled modem several times before each test. have taken out tweaks. reformated one machine completely. turned off firewall and antivirus (Norton antivirus and Zonealarm) with same result on all machines.

Need some direction to talk to provider (Road Runner) with some degree of intelligence.

Thanks

Does this happen consistantly or does it depend on the time of day?

If it is consistant, I would look and see if you have too much line noise on your cable.

If it happens during the evening, then I would suspect an overloaded node. Call RR and complain and demand credits until they fix it.

it happens very consistently overall and is worse in the evening however during the day (weekdays) i have let my plotter run and its almost as bad.

Note: finally talked RR into sending a tech to the house (supposed to be a network tech) to run tests. late next week of course.

thanks for the reply

Remove splitters on the cable line to your modem. Have just it hooked up in your house and see if that helps.
