Hey guys, i'm really sorry for taking up ur time but can ya'll help me decide which cable modem to buy? Toshiba or Motorola. I was gonna go for RCA but i can't seem to find it anywhere except radio shack and they have only the older versions of it. It's probably avilable online now but last time i checked, they were all out of stock. So i'm not going for RCA anymore lolz.. So if you can please tell me which one i should buy.

P.S. my ISP supports both toshiba and motorola.

Thanx

That's a hard question to answer. Either one is great. I have the Toshiba myself, but the question that I ask myself is, "Why do you want to purchase a modem?" I think you'd be better off renting from your provider, if that is at all possible.

Wanna buy one because I don't plan to get rid of cable anytime soon... and I've already ended up paying over $170 to my ISP just for renting the modem. So I figured why not just buy a modem and start saving $15 every month. Get what I'm saying? Once i buy the modem i no longer have to pay for it every month.. I just have to pay for the connection.. so i'll be saving money in the long run. I'm using a Toshiba PCX 1100 right now... works pretty well but some ppl are saying tha motorola is a lot better than toshiba. so i dunno what to put my money on.. lolz..

The one nice thing about renting-If something ever happens to the modem, just call ISP and have a new one. If you buy one, your at the manufacterers mercy and once out of warranty, guess what, are you really saving money? I do have to admit, $15.00 a month is a bit steep and I think, even against my own judgement, that I'd probably purchase one myself.

The motorola is nice for the diagnostics page, which is something you can't have with the Toshiba, but either one are great modems and I'm hard pressed to vote for one or the other. :D

That's right.. the ISP will always replace the modem but see the thing is, it's been a year and nothign has happened to the rented modem yet.. still looks and works as if it was brand new. And i ended up paying over $170 for it already. See? What's the point? If something was to happen to it after a year and i buy a new one, that's still better then renting it cuz a modem would surely last more than a year.. right? so why pay over $200 to some ISP every month when u can buy one for only about $150 or $200 lolz.. get what i'm saying? Anyways.. I think i'll go with the Toshiba then :-) thanx guys.. that's the one i'm using right now.. Toshiba PCX1100.

Personally I would go with the Motorola surfboard 4100. They seem to be the most reliable. I install them and other mdems 6 days a week and they seem to out perform all the others except the rca. RCA would be second choice. If I couldnt have either then it would be a rental..:D

I'd have to agree here...I don't install them, I just troubleshoot them...and I've replaced many, MANY, more Toshibas than I have surfboards...

Unless your IP gives more than about 4mbps of bandwidth, go with the Motorola, just for that diagnostics page. If your ISP does offer really high speeds, get the Toshiba.

so basically your saying toshiba can handle more speed while surfboard is just more stable?

Most cable systems are capped at 3 mbit down or lower, so overall, you'd probably be better off with the surfboard...

3Com has pulled out of the cable modem biz...from what I understand, they had a substantial amount of their sharkfin modems returned...

Out of the 4 that I ever got from our warehouse (we didn't have many at all), I brought back 3 because they wouldn't work right...
