Hey guys.. I recently started to run a webserver for experience, and I need some help
I currently have my main index page.. people can view it ect..
I have a link on my page that if clicked takes the people to a sub dir example
wwwrooot\private\
pretty much if a member tries to access that directory.. I want it to prompt them with a name and password.. Or maybe simply protect the *.htm file and prompt them for a username/passs
can someone please give me a good detailed info or a good url. thank you in advance.

How about sharing the linked file with password protection? Same as you'd share any file on your network.
Right click>sharing>access type.
Am I overlooking something?

Hmm
ok my main problem is I don't know how to password protect the HTML .. right now I have Annonymous unchecked so it asks me for a username and password.. however you can type anything and it will bypass the login.. can anyone give a rookie a hand out there?
thanks

OK here is what you have to do. Unchech anonymouse, and check the box at the bottom that says integrated winodws authentication. That will set it so if you create a username in windows it will allow you to enter that username and password to get access.
If you want to password protect just a folder then when you click on the plus sign next to the webserver name you should see a list of folders that you have shared. Right click on the folder to password protect and click properties. Then go to directory security, and again uncheck anonymous and click on integrated windows authentication.
Hope this helps.

However not really sure what you mean by the drop down menu.. for example..
do you mean the menu in I.I.S or the outside menu? as it stands I did all that you meantioned above already.. but if a user types in anything and presses enter they still goto my page.. as it stands they just get a box that says name and pass.. they can easily bypass it.. so the permission menu? were is it's location.?
thanks for all the help

Im not sure how they are bypassing that. If I set a password protected folder if they dont enter a username / password, it gives the error page, which says Unauthorized access. I will look into it a little more when I get home later.
