Hi guys. recently, I notice that under my local internet connection status. My cable modem would send out lots of data even when I'm not doing anything. I would constantly get like 2-6KB of data being sent out.

One think so weir is that when I'm dling things, I can get 200KB/sec data being transfer out. What the hack is going on??????? Can anyone explain????

P.s: I'm using WinXP Pro

Has far has I know thats normal (dont know about 200kb though) its sending request for the next packet, its how tcp-ip works its not a one way street.Has far has when your doing nothing its just pinging your isp (normal)but shouldnt ever be that high.

Perhaps a firewall might be in order so you can monitor/choose what is being sent/received.

Check to make sure your computer is not a zombie for someone else (i.e. trojan horse) and that you don't have a bunch of spyware installed.

So is there a way of disable the ping thing?? Cos the amount of packet sent and more than the amount of packet recieved for me. It kinda double my usage. can anyone tell me how to do it???

First you have to figure out which program is sending data. Then you figure out if that's sending of data is good or bad. A firewall will allow you to control what data is being sent and received.

Zone Alarm is a good firewall.

Hi guys. I just found out that it wasn't because of the windowsXP settings that causes this because I just realized that even when I turned off my computer and leave the cable modem on, the activities light on the cable modem always flashing. and when I unplug the cable to the computer, the light would stop flashing. So do you think my cable modem is stuffed?? Or what??
