I have two computer connected together with a netgear rt314 router. I'm using @home as my ISP. The desktop is connected with an @home USB connected and the laptop is connected via a Netgear ethernet card FA510. The system woks just fine in the sense that both computers can connect to the internet at the same time, but the problems is speed. If I disconnect the router I get fantastic speeds, but when the router is connected, the speeds drop dramatically. Any ideas where I can look for a solution?

hmm... your saying that one computer is connected to the modem via usb and another is connected to a router via ethernet (and the router is connected to the modem via ethernet)?
if thats the case then ditch usb and get a pccard network card and use it to connect the laptop to the router, that should get your speeds back up
