hey guys...
just a lil question... doesn't involve much but i'm just curious

most of you guys that talk about ur speed being able to go up to 3-5MB/Mb... i was wondering... are speeds rated according to Megabits or Megabytes?

guess what i'm trying to say is... i'm getting a dl speed of 254KBps... which is around 2.5Mbps... when the cable company gives out a rated speed for the cable modem... it's in Megabits or Megabytes...

if they're giving it out in Megabits... then i think it's misleading hence most peepz that don't know much about pc's would think that they would be able to dl in the range of 1.5MBps instead of 150KBps...

okie i'm confusing myself... hoipe someone knows what i'm talkin about :)

It's rated in kilobits/megabits. Bytes / 8 = bits.

So if you're getting 254 kilobytes (x8)= 2032 megabits

I think you mean 2.032Mbps :D

kidd 250KBps does not mean 2.5Mbps.

254KBps * 8 = 2032Kbps or 2.032Mbps

Most cable systems institute upload and download caps which pan out as shown below

Upload:
128 kiloBIT/16 kiloBYTE
256 kiloBIT/32 kiloBYTE
384 kiloBIT/48 kiloBYTE

Download:
1 megaBIT/125 kiloBYTE
1.5 megaBIT/188 kiloBYTE
2 megaBIT/250 kiloBYTE
2.5 megaBIT/313 kiloBYTE
3 megaBIT/375 kiloBYTE

Hope this helps :)

Like it or not, speed has always been rated in kilobits ever since the advent of 14.4 kilobit per second modems.

Nobody ever talked about speed concerns from modems much until broadband became available.

you mean kilobits... ;)
but yea now i get what they're talking about...
but the reason why i was confused was when i talked to my cable company... the guy told me that i was guaranteed 1.5Mbps down and 56.1KBps up
which was like a crisscross of what i was supposed to get
i.e. instead of giving me all bits answer he gave me one in bits and one in bytes... that's why i was wondering why is my speed only 56.11Kbps instead of 56.1KBps and the 1.5Mbps down
that kinda got me confused but now i get what's goin on...

thx guys for clearing that up for me ;)
