Cedclark TARGET AUDIENCE THEORY:
it is simply this:
the GameCube will most likely survive in 2nd place. i am not saying this because i love the GameCube, but because it has a different demographic in mind. GameCube targets a completely different kind of gamer than the XBox and PS2. the GC targets the Nintendo fan, younger audiences (yes, i said it), and people who like simple addictive gameplay, in addition to multiplayer fanatics. the big difference between the PSX and the N64 was that the N64 was the multiplayer party machine: Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye 007, Smash Bros., Perfect Dark, Mario Party, etc. The GameCube may be the same; Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Monkey Ball, etc. GameCube targets gamers who like simple addictive party-like gameplay.
the PS2 and the XBox are after a COMPLETELY different side of the market. they want the gamers who like "mature" games more than anything, single player adventurers, serious simulations, etc. examples of this are Final Fantasy series, Metal Gear Solid, Halo, Gran Turismo, etc. etc.
so since PS2 and XBox are after seperate markets from GameCube, the real war is NOT between GC and XBox, but rather XBox and PS2. while XBox and PS2 battle for the #1 spot in mainstream videogaming, Nintendo will be quite happy just watching them war and making the same old great games it always has.
do you see? this explains why GC is winning in the polls on the internet against XBox and PS2. while GC has their entire target audience rooting for them, PS2 fans should be pissed because XBox has splintered their market, much like it happens in politics. The Bull Moose party splintered the Republican party earlier this century and what happened? the Democrats won. the same thing.
so who will get #1 and who will drop to #3 between PS2 and XBox. it's hard to say. right now, PS2 has the advantage because of all the games and franchises it has, but XBox will slowly be gaining with their newly found exclusivities and higher graphical prowess. Microsoft AND Sony don't seem like they will bow down... we'll have to see who gets the championship cup.
so as you can see, Nintendo fans and Sony fans have nothing to argue about. they're two very different systems. in my opinion, Nintendo fans and XBox fans have nothing to argue about either. it's all about PS2 vs. XBox. just wait, you'll see.
