New Net (NewDotNet)
Status: BAD GUY
New.net is a domain registry that allows all kind of cute name spaces like .family, but it also propagates some amazingly brazen and destructive spyware, while simultaneously damaging the entire Internet for all users. As always, don't believe (or sue) me. Sue the VERY cool site called Counterexploitation and lose. They have this to say about Newdotnet:

"While several such nonstandard TLDs are currently implemented by a number of organizations and under consideration by ICANN, this particular implementation smacks of an attempt to overthrow more legitimate pioneers of alternate domain-names (e.g. AlterNIC) for a quick buck. The multiple systems offering the alternate TLDs will ultimately result in widespread namespace overlap, meaning that multiple sites can be using the exact same address, and what site comes up when you enter, say, www.example.free, will depend on whose DNS server gets queried first!"
Worse, NewDotNet works by damaging the user's computer, and it might even track demographics, as admitted in New's own privacy policy. It's a tricky little b--d. It can often beat Zone Alarm, and it's generally tough to get rid of without extensive Registry hacking. Worst yet, it can damage your computer by one simple click at its web site. From the same people:

WARNING: CEXX.ORG recommends that users do not click on the "enable your browser" link on the above Web site. Doing so loads a Java applet that requests permission to perform high-risk activities, including reading, modification or deletion of files on your hard drive, and running native machine code on your system. The applet alters your Internet settings to route requests to its service, specifically by tampering with your Winsock settings! Don't try this at home.
