View Full Version : Zone Alarm is acting Strange..
Ok, basically zone alarm has been recently giving me trouble in that it won't recognize my connection to my dsl provider in it's local zone. It used to do this automatically, but ever since I had to reinstall my connection software, zonealarm doesn't detect the network connection, and I either have to add the ip address manually (it's not static), or turn the security down to medium.
I don't want to have to do either if I can help it.... Any suggestions?

I'm not an expert on DSL connectivit software, but isn't adding your DSL headend to your loze defaeting the purpose of the firewall?
My router is not in my localzone - maybe im just paranoid...

Leave local zone on medium. I think this is the default setting for it anyway. Do you share any resources? How many computers on your home network? If answer is nothing but yours on internal network, I would set that to medium and let it go. Should be more worried about the internet side of things hehe. IMO.
I wouldn't have it add it automatically if I could help it, but if I don't add it, I can't access anything on the internet.... Of course, it might have something to do with my setting being at high.... but I like running in "stealth" mode... makes me seem someone Solid Snakish or something... In any case, I think It's working again, didn't really do anything, kind of "fixed itself" it seems.

The default setting for the local zone is *MEDIUM* and the internet default is *HIGH*.
With those settings are you having connection problems with ZA?
Is your system part of a local network? If it isn't then you don't need to worry about the local side of the firewall.
Try using the search bar at ZoneLabs (http://www.zonelabs.com) and enter zonealarm and yadayadayada(insert brief problem description here) and see what it comes up with. Their info on problemsolving is huge and you should get a result if you work at it a bit.
Good luck.

Well Croc, I used to have problems with the internet default of high, but as I said in my previous post, it seems to have worked out, as now zone alarm will put my dsl connection in it's local zone, allowing traffic to flow through.
Thanks everyone for your help, and I will take your advice for any future problems that I'm SURE to have :D
Hmmm... My mistake.
Guess I just missed the last line.
Great that it's ok now.

i keep my DSL router out of my local zone and only have a set range of IP's in my local zone (my comptuer, old computer, moms computer, etc)
seems like if you set the router as being in the local zone it kind of defeats the purpose of having ZA at all
i would try uninstalling ZA and deleting its directory to get rid of the settings files, then reinstall so that you get the default settings, try it from there without changing anything

Forgive me if I am telling you something you know.
In ZA if you go to the left side "Firewall" selection and click the "Zones" tab, you will see "IP adddress sites" with their "Names". Each of these will have three zones: Internet, Tursted, or Blocked. Select your name or IP address/Site and click on whichever of those three works for you. I think you might want "Internet".
