Ok Guys Ive formatted. Now I have a problem. I used this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33291&area=search&ordinal=2

And made the 6 disk XP pro boot disk.

"Problem is when I get to disk 6 it gives me this error!

A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen
appears again, follow these steps:

The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your system vendor or
visit http://www.hardware-update.com for an updated BIOS. If you are unable to obtain an updated BIOS or the latest BIOS supplied by your vendor
is not ACPI compliant, you can turn off ACPI mode during text mode setup. To do this, simply press the f7 key when you are prompted to install
storage drivers. The system will not notify you that the F7 key was pressed - it will silently
disable ACPI and allow you to continue your installation.

Technical information:
***STOP: 0x000000A5 (0x00000002, 0 x81BEC7B8, 0xE1063008, 0x81BECCA8)"

Ive tried and tried but it keeps stopping at this point.

My motherboard is an Intel Gigabyte GA-6BXC 440BX AGPset. Bios version is 2.7 I think currently.

The other thing is Ive formatted. If i try using the Win98 boot disk I can get a CD ROM Drive Prompt. But if I put in the cd and type Setup , it says something about "this can only be done from windows"

Im sure the CD is bootable because when i put it in the CD drive (when i was still in 98) it detected it and asked me all these options such as install, check compatibility etc"

Please try and help cos I have no net access and can only ask questions from work and tomorrow is the weekend!! :(

Should I update the BIOS? Or what? Or is there a way I can just boot the OS off the CD. What do I need to do????? (Ill go away now).

Hi mate, when u re-install and u see the blue screen and u press f6 (i think) if u have a scsi drive (orsomething..can't remeber the exact wording) press f5 and it'll bring u up a little option screen .. from there select standard computer and then enter then it should load through and all your acpi worries will be gone... until u try and shutdown your computer.. but that's easily fixed by going into the hardware and selecting veiw all and then enabling the shutdown thing that's disabled...goodluck :D

Go into your Bios and make the cd rom boot first. restart with the xp cd in the cd rom drive and presto. It'll format if you want, create extended partitions, and setup xp. The setup file on the xp disk is only windows based. I beleive the only file on the disk you can use in Dos is i386 which contains all the installation files.

"Go into your Bios and make the cd rom boot first"

And how exactly do I do that? :) Believe me Im not computer illiterate, but hell BIOS changes really stump me!

Don't flash your Bios yet. When you first start your computer keep hitting Delete or F1. The keys differ on different systems. It should tell you how to get into your bios on bootup.
When you're in this "forbidden zone" called the Bios...jk
go to the BOOT option. There you can select which drive will boot first. If you're booting from a floppy disk, like a Win 98 boot disk, you'd select floppy to boot first. But you want your CD Rom to be the first to boot so sellect that. When you're done that change your CPU Core voltage to 100 Volts :D ....IGNORE THAT LAST STEP, wouldn't even be possible...anyway....When you're finished selecting your CD Rom to boot first look on the screen for an option to exit the Bios. I normally press F10 but that might not work in your case.
You could insert the CD now, while bootup is taking place, or wait until Windows finishes booting, insert the CD, and restart.
Be possitive and don't be affraid to go into your Bios. If you make changes you didn't want, you always have the option to return the previous settings when exiting.
There's a lot you can learn from browsing your Bios like your CPU and MB temperatures.

Good luck

OK thanks so much. My 4 partitions are all in Fat32 still (but formatted).

Can I install XP Professional onto Fat32 drives or must I change to NTFS32? If I do change, will the Setup do it for me or must I do it from Fdisk?

(Thanks for all this..its just that im gonna print it all out and take it home seeing as I have no net access so detail is crucial :) )

Thats why Im being so specific :)

It will install on Fat 32. It will ask you to switch or not just select keep my current file system or something.

Setup gives you that option, fat32 or ntfs.........

Hi guys OK i ducked home and tried it.

Still no go. I booted from the CD and it went fine until the end when it gave me the same error (with the blue screen regarding non ACPI compatibility.

SO I tried it again but this time doing this

"Hi mate, when u re-install and u see the blue screen and u press f6 (i think) if u have a scsi drive (orsomething..can't remeber the exact wording) press f5 and it'll bring u up a little option screen .. from there select standard computer and then enter then it should load through and all your acpi worries will be gone... until u try and shutdown your computer.. but that's easily fixed by going into the hardware and selecting veiw all and then enabling the shutdown thing that's disabled...goodluck "

So when I did that it then allowed me to go into the main setup screen and at 52% it stopped saying "cannot find MSJET40.DLL". It said I could skip it and push F3 to continue but at the risk of the Setup not completing properly.

Lo and Behold it completes, reboots and as it gets into windows " I get a fatal error cant remember exactly what it said but it was as soon as I came back to the main setup screen saying Windows XP followed by the PC restarting"

Why cant it find MSJET40.dll?

The other thing is I tried installing Win2k Professional and EXACTLY the same error regarding the BIOS came up.

What to do??:(

You don't need ACPI for WinXP, I modded my BIOS so I can turn it off.

You may need to put your controller drivers on a floppy to install by pressing the F6 key.

If you press the F5 key it will bring up a window to pick "Standard PC". Pick that if you can get the prompt, at the very start of the install.

Try updateing your BIOS, it can't hurt.

I had to use the boot floppies to install, I caould not get it to boot to the cd rom, no matter what I tried.

Try making the boot disk again, maybe one of them are bad.
