boot off your win98SE boot disk/floppy. At the A:\ prompt type format C: (hit enter) and you have to format ALL the partitions

format C:
once done

format D:
once done

format E:
once done

format F:

I don't know what you're talking about, you can just format C. I format C drive once every few weeks and restore a clean image, while the data on D drive remains untouched. Works fine.

Boot up with Win98 floppy

At A: prompt, type "format c:", proceed

Once it's done, get your WinXP CD, reboot (you should be able to boot from the XP CD, if not change CD-ROM to the first bootable device in your BIOS), and install it to the freshly formatted C.

You can just format when you install XP from the CD.

jz: There's no need to format to "dump" a hard disk image. The image will overwrite everything, including the previous format, if any. You can use programs such as Ghost to copy images to unformatted hard disks.

Yeah, I know you can overwrite the previous image, but I like to format. Feels cleaner.:p

I believe that you can format existing d,e, and f partitions within c using the right click >format of the selected drive option...might also want to consider a dual-boot of win98se on c , and win xp on d drive, keeping existing fat 32 file system....then you can put shared apps on e drive, and data, games etc. on f for example...just a suggestion to utilize existing 4 partitions...
