I am ashamed to say, but I have AOL DSL. I have AOL's DSL so it's not me connecting to a DSL then using AOL on tcp\ip to connect, rather it is AOL using WinPoEt. I would like to know if anyone knows how I can get around opening AOL at all and connecting? I would like to do this because the connection is fast enough for me, but AOL, well goes without saying is CRAP for an ISP software:p Anyway, I just want to know if there is a patch, registry edit or some software that I could use to sign on, then use IE to surf, which I do anyway, but without using the AOL software. I know there has to be a way because if AOL can't even write a software that is basically a web browser with buttons and make it work, they sure as hell can't write a DSL software that I HAVE to use in AOHell. Help me, I'm dying over here. ;)

AOL sucks monkey balls. They try to block everything that isn't "theirs" on their network. And I guess it is THEIR network but it's still kinda crappy. I feel you but imagine your situation is worse... I was pissed when they blocked gAIM.

Your best bet from the little I know about AOLDSL is to make IE or whatever "look like" AOL stuff.... of course this probably violates all kinds of licenses and could land you with a hefty fine or prison.

Good luck anyway.

AOL pretty much locks down the way you can even log on to their dial up servers, effectively forcing you to use their client software. They do implement their own PPPoE functionality with the software, that also including the PPP adapter that binds your network and/or dial up adapter to an IP address. Very little lead way to get around it.

use up your contract and get a respectable dsl service...the fact that you are capable of manuevering yourself through the internet to find a forum alone states that you are far beyond the idiots that use AOL in any way shape or form. AOL is for the average joe that knows very little (if anything) about computers or the internet, and as such, their software reflects that. It's easy to use and extremely unflexable. I would recommend earthlink dsl, or I've also heard a lot of good things about direct tv's dsl service. Otherwise, knuckle down and bare with the "pretty" graphic interface of aol, and try not to blow a fuse when you run into problems.

Yea, I really do need to get rid of this crap. AOL really doesn't deserve my money, simply because all they do is use it to send out those damn cd's to everyone in the US. I'm just going to start beating them with a hammer then sending it back to them. I write them e-mails everyday telling them how there service and software is a big joke, but they read off their little cards of what to say, and say the same thing everytime. I was thinking about the direct TV DSL because they give you a static IP address, so that would be cool, to be online all the time. Thanks for the advice. :)

Complete fix:

Call 1-800-4-Online or whatever
(EDIT)
Off AOL site: 1-800-708-0719

Cancel

Get real DSL

I know not everyone likes this method - but its the best

Well you should be able to log onto AOL as normal and then use IE? I have on this on the dial up version on other ppl's machines.
