Davidmg1: We don't mean to be insulting, but this is a regular issue here, sometimes turns into flame wars about the legalities and ethics of the situation. Trust us, they do come after customers that do this, and they do file criminal charges.

most areas have filters that will block out all the cable frequency leaving only internet available. And listen to everyone else, they speak the truth. Not worth the hassle to steal cable tv when you can get it for like 25 a month.;) :p

I work or use to for the @home installations. here are the facts...
yes it is illegal to recieve unpaid for signal of cable tv and I dont promote it by any means. If a job is done proper and a CX signs up for internet and not cable they will install a filter to block ch
14-XXX.
If the cable modem is picky or the signal to your house isnt all that good, they will remove the filter to avoid any obstructions in line. If you put a splitter on the @home line and try recieving cable you can do it without any harm. Your TV may have a downgraded reception but should still work fine. I think for 18.00 a month you may as well just pay for it though.

In many cases the "traps" actually drop your signal from 2 - 6 db, depending on what kind it is... I used to "forget" the traps on some of my service calls because I was too busy (lazy) to run a new drop or install an amp...hehehehehehe
