Can I install XP, and keep WIN98 on a dual boot Until I decide if I want to stick with XP? I fear change!

It can be done if you have an extra partiton to install it to.

Pop in the XP CD while in Win98, and say no to upgrading it (You want the full install, so you MUST have the full install CD).

You will come to a page eventually with an "advanced" button, enter it and check off the box for "I want to choose the partition"
XP will start the install, then reboot and ask you which partition you want to install it to, and give you a list of all your partitions to pick from.

Make sure you read all the pages in the install, so you don't miss any options. It's quite easy. Also there is a readme file on the CD, have a look through there before you start too, it may help you with other options.

I thought that you didnt need a full install cd if you already had a full version of win98? I know you'd be limited to the home version, but would a full version be necessary to do it like that? If it is necessary, you might want see this:

another postings that shows a great full version price! (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54453)

I doubt you can do a full install with an upgrade CD to dual boot Win98 and XP. I don't have an upgrade CD to test it though.

I'm assuming that the big difference in price of an upgrade vs a full install CD means that it can't be done, or why would there be a couple hundred bucks difference in the price ?

You may be right OTD, I don't know for sure.

Good stuff, and it didn't take you very long at all. :)

Do you have the full install CD, or the upgrade?

Don't forget to update your sig now that you have 2 OS's

With any version of Windows you can do a full install from the upgrade cd as long as you have a previous version of Windows on cd. It will ask you to insert your older CD to verify you are eligible for upgrade. As far as dual boot, just boot into 98 and insert the XP cd, and do a full install on a separate partition.
