Networking with a Net Gear hub

I have a 4 port hub. I want to NetWork my laptop to our desktop. I do not want to use internet with the lap top. What do I need to do? ON my lap top, the nic card isn't letting it connect. Does that have something to do with the computer? How do I reinstall the network drivers? PLease help

Ok Mitch the basics of a home network are as follows. Your comps need to have the same network protocals installed ie. TCP/IP all computers have to have this installed. Then you need to enable file and print sharing on both computers. Then all computers need to have the same workgroup name this is not super important it just makes it easer to find the computer in the Network neighborhood. If you need help finding all these things let me know
