OK I've got a Linksys cable/dsl router and a cable modem. 2 comps, both running win 98 are using the cable connection fine, but now I want to set up file and printer sharing as well. I also use ZoneAlarm, and I think it is causeing my network problems. THe computer with ZoneAlarm installed cannot see the other computer, and the other computer cannot see either computer in the Nethood. I tried adding the other computer to my "Trusted local zone" and what not, but it hasnt helped. I've got NetBUI installed on both. Any ideas? thanks everyone

Basics: Is f/p sharing bound to NetBeui? Did you share out the drives/volumes that you are trying to access? Both machines need same workgroup.
How did you add the machines to your local zone - by ip, host, network?

I uninstalled ZoneAlarm from the computer. Wasn't causing problems. The *good* computer can see iteself in the network, but the other one can't even see itself in the nethood. I took all the bindings off tcp/ip, and put both of them on NetBEUI on both computers, restarted at least 500 times, and still no luck. On the computer that cant see itself the ethernet card says that it is in PnP mode. I don't know what this is, but maybe it is causing problems? Not sure, thanks for you help

Welcome
PlugAndPlay. Thats ok for W98. Try uninstall/reinstall NIC drivers on the problem box. Make sure you get the latest from their website.
Do you have a Network Neighbothood icon on your desktop?

ok i got my good computer to recognize the other comp, but the problem computer cant see anything on the network. (Yes, i have a network neighborhood icon on my desktop). I am happier with what I have, but i still can't get the bad comp to network itself. thanks

In your network settings compare you clients and services. I have a feeling that's where your issue lies. Now that I think about it, if your NIC had a problem you would probably see it when connecting to the cable network.
Assuming your client for ms networking is also bound to Netbeui, I would remove all protocols and services. Then add Netbeui and f/p sharing (testing LAN connectivity before adding TCP/IP for your cable service). Have you been experimenting with permissions?

You didn't do anything crazy and install your ISPs software did you?

no, everything is running perfectly except the one computer cant see the network. It can access the internet and everything, just cant see the network. The other computer can access it, and when i try to shut down the bad computer it warns me that there are "1 users connected to it", the bad computer just cant see the other one.
Do you have any shares created on the "good" computer?
