View Full Version : Linksys Wireless network quite slow

Hello.

After going through the entire forum and not finding anything that quite matches my situation, I've decided to post my own question.

I have a Linksys BEFW4S11 wireless router and a notebook computer using a WPC11 PC Card wireless network adaptor. The notebook is running WinME. The other node on my home network is a home-built tower running Win2k. The tower connects to the router via a 3Com 10BaseT NIC and a few feet of Cat 5 cabling.

Networking the two machines for file and print sharing was a breeze, and they both connect to the Internet (ADSL) with no problem.

My particular problem is that when sharing files and printing, the data transfer rate is unbelievably slow. In fact, the machines transfer files and other data much more slowly to each other than they do to and from the Internet (!!!). My average transfer rate, accoding to Linksys' configuration utility was about 20,000 bytes (about 160k bits)/second. This is considerabley slower than the nominal 10m bits/second that the 3Com card is supposed to be capable of, as well as the WPC11's advertised 11m bits/second.

Following an earlier poster's recommendation that I bind NetBEUI protocol to MS Client and File and Print Sharing, as well as unbind TCP/IP to these utilities, I've managed to approximately double my throughput to about 42,000 bytes (336k bits)/second. This is still slower than my WAN connection by far, which has an advertised throughput of 1.5m bits/second downstream.

Any ideas? Please don't hesitate to ask if you require further information of me.
