Can i use telnet to connect to the Netgear RT314 router, since i have a linux box without graphic setup? + with this router, can i specify an ip address for each pc, i.e. my linux box will always be 192.168.1.101 and my pc will always be 192.168.1.100 even when i turn one off?

Yes you can telnet to the NetGear router, matter of fact you have to use TelNet to work with the more advanced features which it's bare bones web admin doesn't cover.

Yes specifying LAN IP addresses works fine. But you should also specify the gateway and DNS, not just the IP addy. Leave the LAN DHCP service of the router turned on as a safety net. Specify your LAN IPs outside of that range. Unless you changed the defaults, the NetGear runs a 192.168.0.XXX scope.

So you have your IP scheme, same 255.255.255.0 subnet for all
Gateway for all is the router, 192.168.0.1
WINS disabled on all
DNS for all is your ISP's two DNS servers.
