Hello-
I have ATT@home digital internet cable installed. I have okay download speeds ranging from 2mb/s(at4am) to 400kbps(around6pm)... I live in a highly populated area with many internet subscribers.
My game pings are nuts... they go from 300-5000 ping in the evenings. I have to play around 4am to get sub100 ping and that's with 2mb/s download speed! With tracert and ping in msdos it shows about 90-500 ping just to get to a local university website.
Is this normal for cable? with IDSL i would only have 144kbps up and down speed and always get sub 100 ping in a good cs server. Should I switch to DSL since game pings are important to me while download speeds are not that important?
Here are my stats....

I have Cacheman installed but not running all the time
I have NVMax installed for the geforce2
I have the @home patch installed
I had the speedguide 98 patch installed but it didn't seem to effect anymore than the @home patch
and I have the Cablenut installed
I have a 1.4ghz athlon running at 1.5
I have a leadtek geforce2 PRO/GTS card
512 mb of RAM
40gb 7200 RPM hd
an ECS K7S5A mobo
my modem is the RCA digital cable modem Model DCM235.. it's white/small/has 6 lights in front and looks a little old.
I live near a University now with Cable, with the DSL I was living at home just to clear up the confusion.
See help thread below, DISABLE PROXY:)

Thanks,
In the TCP/IP analyzer it shows as a different RWIN than what shows in cablenuts. I installed the v386 patch (i think that's what it's called) and all the other patches but it's still a different rwin.
The proxy removal seemed to help webbrowsing a bit but are there any tips as to how to decrease pings in my online games?
Thanks much
Maybe some help in Online gaming forum, but before you go, what OS and please do this:
Please click in my signature where it says Test tweak here, then:
At top where it says edit click and select, Select all,
Then go back to same edit button at top, click and select copy.
Come back to Speedguide, same thread you were on, in post reply box, with cursor blinking at begining of box go to top, edit, click, select paste, click, this will put information in box. Please X out your IP address, Thank you.:)

Oh, I see the RWin works now...
For Win 9x bring up Cablenuts adjuster inside icon on desktop in box that says Cablenut, click on adjuster, in box that says DefaultRvcWindow take out number that is in there and put in one of these, 1 at a time, try:
Leave GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize blank
You do not have to show me but check analyzer here at SG to make sure RWIN is in, you will see number right after (RWIN) on analyzer
At bottom click save to registry, and REBOOT each time you change value in adjuster or it will not work.Click on tools at top of IE, internet options, delete files and offline files (This is safe, temp files) and click on clear history after EVERY test Quick speed test, choose location closest to you: For Win 9x bring up Cablenuts adjuster inside icon on desktop in box that says Cablenut, click on adjuster, in box that says DefaultRvcWindow take out number that is in there and put in one of these, 1 at a time, try: 51100, 554800, 601520, 607360 or 642400

Speedtest may open another browser, so check taskbar and close other one, no other programs should be running, No AIM, ICQ, Virus scanner, Firewall, nothing
1.) Make sure defrag has been run, defragmented files slow you down.
2. At top of IE, click on Tools, internet options, click on delete files and click on offline files (It's safe), click on clear history, yes
3.) Go to Start button, programs, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup, Click OK (Safe)
4.) Run scandisk (Short version)
5.) Scandisk on XP?
Click on My Computer, select Drive that XP is on, RIGHT click on BLANK place, select properties, then tools at top tab, click check now, check box automattically fix system errors, click start.
Once you find fast number for you, you want to save it, on file at top of adjuster click on that, save custom settings, put RWIN size in as name and click on save, now if you ever want these settins back, click on file, open custom settings file, and click on RWIN number, then click on save to registry at bottom, and REBOOT, your done. How to do real dowwnload test on help thread below in signature. This is all I recommend, if anyone else jumps in with something else, good luck, but it did not come from me.
Blank boxes in adjuster just mean default values are being used.
SAVE SETTING's so we do not have to do this again, directions above, good luck.

Welp,
i've done everything possible and it seems that I'm just stuck with high pings with ATT@home unless it's 4am in the morning where I can get OKAY pings.
I live near a University and nearly every house on this block has some sort of high speed internet.
I've switched to DSL hoping my ping times will go down... It will be activated on the 6th of next month.. I can wait I suppose.

I tried.. still doesn't reduce ping
Too much people downloading "ahem" at the same time does that for you.;)
