View Full Version : Strange Ratios!!!
I use a ftp Program (Serv-u) I have a DSL connection.
768KB down - 256 KB up
I got a friend in Chicago and he has 1500KB up and down!
When i download from his server, i got a 2KB ratio!!!!!!
He give me full acc to his ftp!
I am the only user on his ftp. When i go to a friend of mine
in Holland, i can download with 768KB!!!
What is wrong. Wich settings must be changed?????????
:(
Any ideas??????
Seeing as how your from Germany, that might give you a clue. You are probably going past MANY MANY hops before you even hit your friends ip, and that in itself could mean exact speed or no speed. Have you tried a traceroute to your friend? Try it, let us know what you get. We might be able to make more out of it then.
what does it mean traceroute??????
Im a newbe in these settings! How can i make this ????

What part of the continent does your friend live in? That makes a big difference. The farther away from you, the higher latency will be, and the less bandwidth you can get end to end. Like wee96 said, post a few traceroutes. Here's how you do it:
C:\WINDOWS\TRACERT OMARNYC.COM > c:\trace1.txt
C:\WINDOWS\TRACERT PCMAGLABS.COM c:\trace2.txt
C:\WINDOWS\TRACERT CASHWARS.CO.UK c:\trace3.txt
Copy and paste all three files in here, change the first hop to something else so no one knows your IP address.
ok, i have traced! But what should i do with this data???
I cannot change anything at all!

Okay.. Your traces would be a lot easier to read if you copy and pasted those files into a Notepad file, and you unchecked Word Wrap in Notepad.
Sorry, my CHicago Friend helped me and traced our connection for me! I get this Data over ICQ! I cannot change anything.
Im not that average user!
But anyway, what is the data good for??? There is no possibility
to change the ways from Germany to US, or???????ß
I´m very frustated ;-)

No need to worry. The data is useful in telling where the problem lies with your Internet connection. Whether it is on your end, or your Internet provider's end. I guess I can try and read through the text. I'll let you know what I make of it in a little while.
Thats very nice of you, that you take time to help me!
On the other way, i can download from some ftp servers with about 80KB sec .... I think its the traffic in the rushhour of
the internet.
Ok, maybe you can read anything out of this bla bla.......
CU and thanx .....
aehm, and whats the meaning: connection with passive mode, or not?????

I'm confused. I ran a trace to your friend's nearest hop, 209.224.238.69, and my trace program says he/she lives somewhere near Elburn, IL. That hop averages 41ms, so his/her end is good. What I'm confused about is your end. According to the hostname on your hop, it suggests you're using a dial-up, or perhaps ISDN, connection through Deutsche Telekom AG. My trace program returns 100% packet loss on two hops before your end, but that might be because your ISP has ICMP echo packets disabled on their network. Your latency did average around 104ms to two hops next to your end, or to 193.158.145.253, at the time I did it, so it seems fine to me also considering you live in Germany. Perhaps you were running some other apps in the background that take up some bandwidth? Or perhaps your friend's FTP site was busy when you were trying to log in to it? I would suggest you run the traces I wrote above, that'll give us a better idea about what's wrong with your Internet line.

aehm, and whats the meaning: connection with passive mode, or not?????
If you enable Passive Transfer mode on your FTP client, you force your FTP server to continue with a file transfer in progress in case it becomes busy and the connection times out due to network congestion. It's a feature that is useful when the network connection on either end is laggy, or busy. It will not increase file transfer speeds.
