download speeds with cable modem are acceptable, but up load
is extremely slow.
Current settings are half-duplex . will changing the settings
to duplex improve upload speeds?

No, doing that is likely to make a mess. You are probably capped at 128 kilobits, or 15 kilobytes, upload.

I dont have cable. But from your statement, cable modems are only half-duplex?
10 mbps is the standard for inner-network limit
half duplex is correct

In this thread we are talking about the Ethernet connection to the user's PC. That is hal-duplex.
The HFC, or cable side, is full duplex, however the upstream can only send data when the CMTS allows it to by assigning one or more upload time slots.
