I just upgraded my bios to support a new 40GB hard drive. Since then my download speed as measured by Toastnet's compressed graphics test is reporting about 87kb! My OS is Win98SE, my cpu is a P166 networked through a Linksys router to a cable modem. I have already manually input speedguide tweaks to the registry

Can anyone suggest what may be wrong? See below for analyzer results.

Thanks, Bob

TCP options string = 020405b40103030201010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 55 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

6507 connections tested since 03.10.2001.

We look the same. I've noticed a speed drop the last few days. I keep changing my settings but the drop keeps happening. Someone smart will be along to give you a hand (and I'll watch so I can apply it to me). ;)

They are ehh.. bankrupted.. no more @Home. Think that AT&T will take over from what Indy said for now.:)

P166?, RWIN is to big for CPU, try RWIN 64240 and check at bottom of page to make sure you have newest firmware for you router 1.40.1 Right here (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/support/linksys_router_help_pg2.htm) :)

Thanks for the response Lobo. I changed the RWIN value to 64240 with no difference in speed. As for the suggestion that I upgrade my Linksys firmware, after reading the "Don't fix it if it ain't broke" caveat on their web site, I hesitate to take a chance on making my router completely inop. Have you any knowledge about what experiences people have had in doing that? Or should I just plunge in?

Thanks again, Bob

I would not worry about router, butt a 166, can't burn no rubber with that, Try RWIN's 96360, 102200, 128480:)

Also do Scandisk, hard drive-long version:D :D
And Disk defragmenter
